Building a circuit block reuse library is easier than you think

A reuse library can boost productivity and product reliability.

There are a lot of hardware functions that can be reused over and over again.  No need to re-invent the wheel.  Making every one of the functional sub-modules sharable in your organization is a dream come true. There is not a single engineer or manager who wants to find out that they just designed a new circuit that resembles one that already existed.

The Cold Reality!

Just about all companies that I am aware of struggle with how to achieve this. It is not a simple task to implement circuit block re-use.

  • You need the ability to create a “Library” of circuit blocks that can be used by both design authoring and design planning tools.
  • All the appropriate engineers need access to the contents.
  • The library needs to be managed:
    • Approval control
    • Read/write access control
    • Easily searchable
    • Etc.

Start with the basics.

Do not bite off too big a chunk of the task. Start with something achievable such as a circuit block library.

The short video that follows will show you how to create a basic block library structure and add functional blocks from an existing circuit to it.

Stay tuned to the Zuken Blog for more on this topic.

Follow the steps below to learn how to import DXF data into a Design Gateway symbol:

  1. Create an empty symbol file in your library using the CR-8000 Engineering Desktop to import DXF data.
  2. Close the target symbol.
  3. Browse to the folder where the target symbol is stored.
  4. Select a symbol in the folder; any symbol can be selected at this point. Right-click and in the assist menu and select Tool > Data Import > DXF Import
  5. Browse to select the DXF file and then browse to select the target path and symbol.
  6. There are some options to set scale, and precision and so on.  Once you have made the appropriate settings, select Execute
  7. Open the symbol and review the results.
  8. Copy and paste this graphic into your drawing format.

Watch the video below for step by step instructions.

Design Gateway 2018There’s an exciting new option in CR-8000 Design Gateway 2018: “Execute Macro to Multiple Sheets. The new functionality allows you to execute macros on specified sheets all at once.

In the example in the video below, I will first create a macro that’ll change all the GND nets to be displayed as blue. This new option is a macro-add in function. So if you’re trying this for the first time, you’ll need to enable it by selecting Tools > Customize and then select the macro/add-in tab. You can then check a box for Execute Macro to Multiple Sheets and select OK.

It’s important to note that some companies have this area disabled to general users. If this is the case, you’ll want to talk with your Design Gateway system admin to enable this cool option for you.

Just imagine how much time you will save by using this function to take care of redundant changes!

Detailed instructions are in the video below.

Oftentimes when we’re working on schematics, the panel menus take up a ton of space on the screen. This is where the Design Gateway auto-hide feature comes in handy.

To enable auto-hide, select the thumbtack located in the top section of the panel; you’ll see the panel roll to the side of the screen. If you hover over it again, it’ll roll back out. Then moving the cursor off will roll it away once again. To fix it back on the screen, select the thumbtack again.

This rollback option applies to the design tree view, the component and symbol panels, net bus labels and the console view.
